Being a birth partner is a really important role. A well informed and supportive birth partner has the potential to make an enormous difference to labour and birth. Your birth partner should be clued up on what you want and need from them whilst you’re giving birth. I’ve created 5 top tips for you to pass on to your partner.

Tips for your birth partner…

  • Birth Plan – our biggest tip is know the birth plan! Know the details, know what your partner does and doesn’t want. Hand over the antenatal notes & birth plan to the midwife. Discuss the birth plan with any additional caregivers so that they know your wishes.
  • Environment – protect the birth environment to make sure it is as perfect as can be. Ensure that it stays dark, quiet and private.
  • Music – make sure that the chosen birth music, relaxation or hypnobirthing tracks are on in the room.
  • Food – offer regular snacks and drinks to help keep her hydrated and energised.
  • Comfort – be her comfort by holding her hand, reassuring her, reminding her to breathe, provide massage and use her chosen affirmations.

The key thing for your chosen partner to remember is that this moment is about you and how you choose to bring your baby into the world. If they respect all your wishes and support you throughout, they should do a fairly good job.
