Gas and air works really quickly and helps to alter your sense of discomfort. I used it in my first 2 labours and found it really helpful.
What is gas and air?
It’s a combination of nitrous oxide and oxygen and is very commonly used as an effective pain relief option in childbirth.
You’ll likely be offered gas and air through a mouthpiece or a mask. Inhale the gas and air as you begin to start to feel the contraction rising, it may take 20-30 seconds for the full effects to be felt, so keep breathing and inhaling through to the peak of the contraction. It might take a couple of contractions to get to grips with the timing so keep trying, don’t give up!
It’s possible that you might feel a little spaced out and for some people, they find that it makes them feel nauseous but just as it works really quickly it always wears off quickly so you won’t be left with any lasting unpleasant effects.
With this form of pain relief, you’re completely in control of when and how you use it, you’re fully conscious and it doesn’t slow down or change your contractions. It’s a very successful pain relief option that can be used anywhere, at home, in the birthing centre or on the labour ward.
