I’ve had quite a few enquiries this past month where the pregnant person is really keen to do a hypnobirthing course but their partner isn’t convinced. They often think it is a bit of a waste of their time. The reasons vary from others not doing it, it appears a bit hippy-like. Why would we do hypnobirthing when we’ve already done antenatal classes. Isn’t that what the midwife is for?

If you’re not sure about coming along to a hypnobirthing course or struggling to convince your partner that a hypnobirthing course is something really worthwhile, maybe ask these questions and see what your answers are.

What is your birth plan?

Can your partner confidently advocate for you and articulate your preferences whilst you’re in labour?

Do you know the pro’s and cons about the various drugs you may be offered during labour?

Do you know how to reduce the likelihood of intervention such as forceps?

Do you know what your preferences would be if you need a surgical birth?

Do you understand the process of labour?

Do you know what to expect when you go into labour?

Do you understand about the birthing hormones? How important they are and how they can impact labour?

Do you know when it’s time to call the midwife?

Do you understand the implications of going into the hospital too early?

Do you know how to get you comfortable during labour?

Do you know any breathing techniques, do you understand the importance of breathing well during labour?

Do you know any massage techniques?

Do you know about the benefits of using a tens machine for pain relief and using the birthing pool during labour?

Do they understand how important the birthing environment is?

Do they understand that their responsibility to create this environment and to be the protector of this space for you?

Do they understand why the environment for your labour is so important and how seemingly small things can slow labour down?

Do they know what different positions they could suggest if labour slows down?

Do they understand the importance of delayed cord clamping?

Why is skin to skin so important for you and baby immediately after birth?

The impact monitoring can have on the progress of labour?

What is vitamin K, why it is offered, how is it delivered?

What are your options are if it’s suggested that baby is big, small, breech…..

Do you know what your rights are?

If your answer to some of these questions is no then you both need to book onto a hypnobirthing course with me.

A hypnobirthing course is a complete and full antenatal education, it prepares both of you for the birth of your baby.

If you’re unprepared for birth it increases the likelihood of intervention during labour. If you’re unprepared you can’t advocate for yourself and your birth partner will not be able to advocate for you either.

Optimise the chances of a positive birth, the best possible birth for you and your baby and book a hypnobirthing course.
