Is anybody ever really ready for birth? I think that you can be!
I’m naturally a very inquisitive person, I love to read and make lists. So when I was pregnant with my first baby I spent many, many hours researching what I could do to have the best possible birth experience. I had a great first birth experience but knowing what I now know it could have been improved enormously.
So where did I go wrong?
I attended regular antenatal classes, watched one born every minute, and I read a few books.
What could I have done differently?
I really didn’t realise just how much your mindset alongside your body needs preparing for birth. Shortly after the birth of my first baby, I read a book called Mindset by Carol Dweck and it was eye-opening about how our mindset works. I highly recommend reading it.
In my subsequent pregnancies I made sure that I was ready for birth by:
- Taking pregnancy yoga classes – I learnt the value of movement in pregnancy and how important it would be for me during birth.
- Learning about the value of relaxation and meditation. Having a toddler and a busy full time job was stressful but learning these techniques helped me stay as calm and relaxed as possible.
- Educating myself further – I was constantly reading more and learning about hynobirthing so that i would be able to understand how my body, brain and hormones all worked together whilst getting ready for birth and during,
