Oxytocin is known as the hormone of love and bonding! It is the hormone that is literally responsible for your whole labour. It is the hormone that stimulates your contractions when you go into labour.
When labour starts oxytocin is released into your blood stream; this stimulates contractions and more oxytocin is released. This encourages your contractions to increase in frequency and intensity, helping you to progress through labour. Without oxytocin your labour will stop.
Making sure that you’re in a calm, comfortable and loving environment during labour is really important. It will help to encourage all that lovely oxytocin to flow. It will also help keep you calm and relaxed.
The more oxytocin there is, the more calm and relaxed you are, the more you can keep that pesky hormone adrenaline away! Cuddles, touch, kisses, massage, and familiar surroundings are all things that will help boost your oxytocin levels.
Have you thought about what you can do to promote the production of oxytocin? What did you do during your labour to boost it?
