Over 25% of the population suffer with hay fever and sadly pregnancy hormones can make you more sensitive and aggravate allergies, increasing your nasal congestion leaving you feeling almost like you have a permanent cold. It is possible in pregnancy that you may suffer from all-year-round allergies. You may also find that you’re more sensitive to things that wouldn’t ordinarily bother you. Common allergens are dust, moulds and pets.
Hayfever/allergies are not dangerous to you or your baby but they can leave you feeling miserable, struggling to sleep and exhausted. Common symptoms include:
- itchy eyes
- sore throat
- sneezing
It will help if you know what triggers your allergies, as you will know to avoid the things that you react to the most. For me, my hay fever is at its worst towards the end of summer, July to September which is generally attributed to Ragweed Pollen. If your hay fever is worse from April to July you’re likely to be triggered by grass pollen and if your hay fever is worse in Springtime March to May time, it is likely that tree pollen may be triggering your allergies.
What can you do to help ease the affects of allergies?
- Shut your windows at home and keep them closed.
- Wear sunglasses to keep pollen away from your eyes.
- Use Haymax or Vaseline around your nostrils and eyes to block the pollen.
- Use saline spray to rinse out your nostrils.
- Avoid hanging your washing outside to dry.
- Dont cut, sit or stand on the grass.
If you’ve tried all of the above and you’re still suffering from your allergies speak to your GP and explore other options that you can try. They may suggest nasal sprays, eye drops or antihistamines.
