IV cannulas are used to provide fluids or medication that you can’t take by mouth directly into your blood stream.

Why might you need an IV cannula in labour?

An IV cannula may be used to administer antibiotics or other fluids and are often used during induction or caesarean. Although they are routinely used in a hospital setting, they are not always needed. If you are advised to have one you may prefer to wait and see if it’s really necessary.

Why might you not want one?

  • If you dislike needles it can be upsetting to have a cannula put in.
  • A cannula can be uncomfortable and get in the way of you moving around freely during labour.
  • Also, it can make position changes during labour more difficult; your hand may be swollen, sore and difficult to flex normally in certain positions.

If you need to have a cannula make sure that it’s as secure as can be so that it’s not easily bashed or knocked out.
