Lightning crotch – have you ever experienced it?
Not everyone will experience it. It’s like a short, sharp, shooting like sensation in your groin area which can often move down the inside of the thigh, usually happening during the third trimester.
Why do we get lightning crotch?
As the baby descends down into the pelvis baby’s head may apply pressure and press onto the nerve endings.
You may experience sensations that come on suddenly with no warning and they may only last a few seconds but they could last up to about a minute. You might feel them in the vagina, inner thigh or in the rectum.
There isn’t much that you can do to stop the sensations completely but, gentle stretching, breathing deeply and changing positions will help.
If you’re not sure whether you’re experiencing lightning crotch or something else seek please seek advice from your midwife or doctor, especially if you feel the pains you’re experiencing could be contractions.
