It can be quite surprising the first time that you see meconium, it is really dark in colour, doesn’t particularly smell and it’s really incredibly sticky!

But, what is meconium?

Meconium is made up of the build-up of all the things that your baby has ingested whilst they were in the womb which includes amniotic fluid, lanugo (the tiny hairs that covered your baby in the womb), intestinal and skin cells and proteins.

Meconium is already in your baby’s bowel when they’re born. It’s dark in colour, often a greeny brown and it’s surprisingly very sticky. Over the first couple of days after birth your baby’s poo will be meconium, once it has passed the poo will change colour gradually to look a little more green, a little runnier and then eventually becoming more yellow.

Sometimes baby’s first poo can come soon after they’re born, remember that it is really, really sticky, it can be a bit messy and it will literally stick to everything!!!

Make sure that you share this with your partner so that they know what to expect in your baby’s first nappy!
