I’ve heard a number of different sayings over the years!

Loose lips = loose hips

Floppy face = floppy fanny

All that you need to remember when you go into labour is that you need to keep your face muscles relaxed, your mouth open and your jaw soft.

Why? Essentially what you need to know is that it’s all interconnected. Your lips are connected to your face and jaw which are connected to ligaments that run all the way down your spine and connect to your pelvic floor.

Why is it important to have a relaxed pelvic floor in labour?

It increases the elasticity of the perineum which reduces the chance of tearing and decreases the likelihood of intervention.

Give it a try now, tense and clench your jaw, grit your teeth and see what you notice tighten up!!!!
