During the birth of your baby, the environment that you give birth in is the one thing that you can have control over, even if you are having a caesarean. The environment around you affects you more than you’ll ever consciously be aware of.
This includes the lighting in the room, the temperature and the number of people.
What can you do to create the best possible environment for you?
- Turn the lights down and close the curtains – this will help you to produce more oxytocin.
- Take a pillow & a blanket from home – taking something from home will make you feel more comfortable.
- Make sure that you’re comfortable and warm, not too hot or too cold!
- Take a photo of your favourite place, an ultrasound picture of your baby, get out your babys first outfit out of the hospital bag – happy thoughts and memories such as a favourite place will help you to produce endorphins, your bodies natural pain relievers,
- Get an eyemask to block out the light and to help you tune out any unwanted distractions.
- Use essential oils like lavender or clary sage to help you to feel relaxed.
- Make sure that your birthing partner protects your birth space by keeping the noise level down and unnecessary people out of the room.
- If you’ve been practicing pregnancy yoga during your pregnancy think about taking your yoga mat with you, also using the birthing pool, they both help to create a safe space just for you.
