The first hour after your baby has been born is known as the golden hour. During this hour, you get uninterrupted skin-to-skin time with your newborn. For many, this is a very important element of giving birth. Unless you or your baby is in need of any medical attention, the first hour after giving birth should be entirely focused on the mother and baby. This is regardless of the type of birth you end up having.
In order to make the best of the golden hour, you, your baby and the room should be kept warm, quiet and calm. This helps to reduce the amount of adrenalin being produced post-birth. It also increases the production of oxytocin which is essential for both breastfeeding and bonding.
Skin-to-skin also helps to regulate your baby’s temperature and it can encourage your placenta to separate.
Our bodies are absolutely amazing! Make sure that you save this and add having a golden hour to your birthing plan!
