The primary function of your uterus during pregnancy is to give your growing baby a safe home. During labour, the function of the changes and becomes all about getting the baby out of your body.

How big is your uterus?

The uterus normally fits into the pelvis, the size will vary from person to person but on average before you’re pregnant it is about the size of a small apple.

During the first trimester, it is unlikely to be visible but usually, as you approach the second trimester it begins to expand and pop out of the pelvis. Eventually, it will increase in size by about 500 times its pre-pregnancy size, becoming roughly the size of a watermelon by the time you’re full term.

After your baby has been born the uterus will continue to contract and reduce down in size taking 6 weeks or so to shrink down to its pre-pregnancy size.
