It’s incredibly important to remember to go for a wee during labour.
If you have a full bladder, it doesn’t leave a huge amount of space in the pelvis. Lack of pelvic space can massively slow down your labour and your baby’s progress through the pelvis on their way out.
Sitting on the toilet is a great birthing position; it’s comfortable, upright, opens up space and takes advantage of gravity. It’s a position that I tried when I was birthing my placenta with my first baby.
The bathroom is a private place where we generally feel safe and relaxed. When we feel observed we produce more of the stress hormone adrenaline which will often slow down labour. Popping into the bathroom to pee can often give you the space and privacy that you need to catch your breath, refocus and get that oxytocin flowing!
